This work is part of a diptych and holds particular importance for me, and even more so as a male artist, confronting a reality that calls for awareness, responsibility, and engagement.
It is a tribute to the 308 women murdered in France between 2022 and 2024 by a current or former partner. Created on bed bases, the work uses the mattress frame as a metaphor for the unseen structure of a relationship : its promise of support, balance, and stability.
At first glance, the piece appears almost decorative : a harmonious grid of colored elements arranged in a soft gradient.
Yet as the viewer approaches, the illusion dissolves. Each element bears a name and an age (the identities of the victims) transforming the composition into a solemn memorial. They are no longer abstract figures, but mothers, sisters, friends, neighbors…
By confronting the viewer with this shift in perception, the work reveals the hidden violence that can exist within intimate spaces. Beyond France, the reality is even more alarming : worldwide, a woman or a girl is killed by a partner or a member of her family every ten minutes…
